Our standards

Independent by design

Reporting and opinion are kept strictly apart. Commentary is labeled as such and written by staff distinct from the reporters covering the same beat. No advertiser, source, or outside party determines what we cover or how we frame it.

Every story is attributed. Where a claim rests on a single source, we say so. Where facts are still unknown, we state what we know and what remains open, rather than filling the gap with speculation.

How a story is made

From source to publication

Gather primary sources

Reporters begin with documents, records, and first-hand accounts, noting where each piece of information came from.

Verify and attribute

Each claim is checked against independent sources before it is written, and every attribution is recorded.

Editor review

An editor who did not report the story reviews the facts, the context, and the language before anything is published.
